Meet Darra & Nic, the hosts of Relatively Unqualified, as they introduce their podcast, share family stories, questionable life choices, and explain why honesty and humor drive this show.
Welcome to the very first episode of Relatively Unqualified. In this introduction, Darra & Nic explain who they are, why they decided to start a podcast, and what listeners can expect moving forward.
Broadcasting from Bend, Oregon during a family staycation, the hosts dive into their dynamic as siblings by marriage, their blended families, and their shared belief that humor and honesty go a long way in navigating relationships, parenting, and life in general. From being a girl dad and a boy mom to reflecting on parenting stages, travel memories, and family quirks, this episode sets the tone for a podcast that does not pretend to have all the answers.
The conversation flows through memorable vacations, concert adventures, parenting reflections, and stories that highlight both growth and questionable decision making. Along the way, Darra & Nic share why they want this podcast to be relatable, healing, and entertaining without pretending to be experts.
This episode lays the groundwork for future conversations around family dynamics, forgiveness, hard truths, relationships, and the lessons learned along the way, all delivered with sarcasm, heart, and zero qualifications.

RU-Episode 0001 - Bend Oregon
Darra 0:16
Hey friends, this is Darra and Nic and we are relatively unqualified.
Nic 0:21
Real talk from two people who shouldn't be giving any advice whatsoever.
Darra 0:25
But here we are.
Nic 0:27
Damn right.
Darra 0:27
Yeah, you know, we're, we're here coming to you from Bend, We're on a little staycation together.
Nic 0:34
Right, party in it up.
Darra 0:35
this is our first podcast and we're trying to get our feet wet with this and just figure it out. So we're really happy you guys are joining us and are gonna listen to us and hopefully we give you something to laugh about at
Nic 0:46
Oh,
Darra 0:46
the end.
Nic 0:46
we will, we will. Don't
Darra 0:48
worry.
Nic 0:49
But, uh, I think this one we're just gonna talk a little bit about who we are, what we're, why are we doing this? You know, they're the what wins and hows and all that good
Darra 0:58
so.
Nic 0:58
sh-t,
Darra 0:58
Yeah.
Nic 0:59
What, why are you doing this? What's, what is your interest in the podcast?
Darra 1:05
I just want to make people laugh. I just want to have fun. Honestly. I just, I think we're funny. I think we're funny and people should hear us.
Nic 1:15
I, I want it for all those same reasons. I think, uh, more people need to hear us. So I think that's a problem is there not a people get to listen to
Darra 1:22
Say,
Nic 1:22
us. I got a lot of sh-t I got a lot of to bring out too. And I feel like being able to do this podcast being live being in person. And soon we'll have people being able to see us, but I think just, Being able to be honest with my troops will everybody or
Darra 1:39
yeah.
Nic 1:39
most people out there do the same for themselves. You know, I know that there's people holding on to things that are scared to talk about. There's, they got hurt. You know, something's happening in life and I'm hoping there's something that I can bring to light. It'll help bring their story to light too, and whether they want to share it or it's here to help, but
Darra 1:56
Yeah, we're going to bring a little bit of, you know, f dynamics into this podcast. we are a brother and sister in law. Nic is married to my sister, my older sister. And we decided that we just wanted to kind of get together and have conversation. We want to talk about family dynamics. We've got a lot of silly sh-t to talk about in our family.
Nic 2:20
Lay, I think relationships to just in general, not just, you know, husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, I just really relationships as a whole, how, how we've dealt with them and.
Darra 2:31
Yeah.
Nic 2:31
Things to work through, work through them and what not to do because I can teach you a lot about what not.
Darra 2:37
Oh, I think we both can teach a lot on what not to do.
Nic 2:42
It is pretty sad too. I think I have like a ton of stuff here, really, we're not going to throw myself one of the bus completely just yet. I ain't going to ask you a few questions, though, just kind of get a little
Darra 2:52
feel
Nic 2:53
for who you are.
Darra 2:54
Oh,
Nic 2:54
I'm not really sure which question I asked you just yet.
Darra 2:57
Keep it easy, it's, it's And I've had a few beers.
Nic 3:01
That's what I want. Okay. Okay. I mean, here's a good one and I think this is a good one to kind of end our night with and then we can kind
Darra 3:10
Okay.
Nic 3:10
of restart tomorrow. But if you punch yourself in the face and it hurts, are you weak or are you
Darra 3:16
strong?
Nic 3:18
Strong. What if you shed
Darra 3:21
Even
Nic 3:21
a tear?
Darra 3:21
stronger.
Nic 3:23
More badass.
Darra 3:24
More
Nic 3:25
Oh,
Darra 3:25
badass.
Nic 3:26
I just don't know if I can even punch myself in the face. I mean, I could probably run myself into a
Darra 3:30
I
Nic 3:30
wall.
Darra 3:30
could punch you in the face.
Nic 3:31
Man, I know you could, I know you didn't enjoy the hell out of it and I'm sure my wife would enjoy it. 'Cause I see you're sitting over there f--king smile.
Darra 3:38
I feel like she's done it before.
Nic 3:40
No, she's damn good. I will, I will say this and I'm only gonna admit this once, but f--k, she f--king tackles. Awesome. She should f--king play football because she's laid me out like f--king Dick Butkus.
Darra 3:54
I believe
Nic 3:55
I'm
Darra 3:55
it.
Nic 3:55
so f--king proud of
Darra 3:56
it.
Nic 3:56
her
Darra 3:56
He
Nic 3:56
for
Darra 3:56
deserved it.
Nic 3:57
Yes and no. Yes and no.
Darra 3:59
No, you did. Just
Nic 4:00
say yes and no.
Darra 4:01
You did.
Nic 4:01
That was it, that one, but it was f--king awesome. It was so proud of her. I would call her a Dick Butkus but I just don't think it was very nice. But she f--king tackles like
Darra 4:09
him.
introduce yourself to the crowd here. What are you about?
Nic 4:16
Handsome Nic. I'm just about having fun. I mean, they asked my 12 year old daughter. She's got the same mentality as me And it's just about having fun. I'm and I'm really about doing this like you said to have fun to talk I've always been told that I'm really good at writing so Originally, I'll begin with trying to write a blog and then most people are Said you start You know, it's kind of funny because I always had a counselor in school tell me I talked too much and then I would never amount to anything if I kept talking through class and all that sh-t and yet Here, I am on a microphone
Darra 4:47
talking see
Nic 4:48
Hey, we're the counselors at now
Darra 4:51
Shows with they know see they didn't know that podcast would be a thing You know back in the 90s.
Nic 4:57
They were old and they just didn't believe it
Darra 4:59
And
Nic 4:59
see talking gets you places,
Darra 5:01
you know God damn it people,
Nic 5:03
b I have three daughters
God that keeps me on my toes
well, you know your nieces are all the pain in the ass?
Darra 5:11
Yeah
Nic 5:11
I forgot about all this one. She's pretty good. She's actually the easiest one They could all be like her life would be easier.
Darra 5:17
Well, I think I think she's raising us
Nic 5:20
Probably true, you know, it's funny because we have a Tracking up on our phone my wife and I and so does she I think she uses on us more than we've ever used it on her. She does
Darra 5:29
She 100%
Nic 5:31
It's pretty
Darra 5:32
she tracks you guys
Nic 5:34
sad. I know it. No, I all three dollars, it's a blessing in disguise Because I think that I've been such a pain in the ass grown up most of my life that if I were to have three boys I probably would have taught them all to be an a--hole like me
Darra 5:47
Love
Nic 5:47
and having daughters. It's softened to me It makes me brings me back down to Earth a little bit so although I have a hard time dealing with the emotional side of it at times Wouldn't trade it for the world. It's the best part
Darra 6:03
Yeah. I would say
You know,
Nic 6:07
punk ass nephew
Darra 6:08
just to give you a little bit of tears you are a fabulous girl bad Good
Nic 6:13
you.
Darra 6:13
on
Nic 6:13
Well
Darra 6:14
good on you
Nic 6:14
Depends on what girl you ask of what time of the day or which day it is but I I'm
Darra 6:19
not asking
Nic 6:19
at the end of the
Darra 6:21
day
Nic 6:22
at the
Darra 6:23
end She's savage.
Nic 6:24
She's about to
Darra 6:25
The
Nic 6:26
most until I
Darra 6:26
off
Nic 6:26
piss her
Darra 6:27
the youngest one salvage I
Nic 6:29
wouldn't trade it for the world it was the best gift and I never I didn't think I was gonna get to be a dad. So I'm actually having the opportunity to do that is Ablessing and I don't take it for granted. Although I will say I did for a while and it wasn't because I don't want to be a dad. I guess I was just always looking so far in the future that my never took the time to appreciate What was right? As they were growing up and getting older so
Darra 6:57
that
Nic 6:57
yeah
Darra 6:57
for
Nic 6:58
Here I am now and I try my best every day to at least be engaged with
Darra 7:02
and
Nic 7:02
them Still come up short sometimes,
Darra 7:06
but yeah,
Nic 7:07
yeah, I'm a dad have daughters
Darra 7:10
I
Nic 7:12
How about you then boys,
Darra 7:15
I'm your boys. I'm a
Nic 7:16
mom
Darra 7:16
boy a boy my your girl dad, and I'm a boy mom Two of
Nic 7:22
Grandma
Darra 7:24
to two two boys and a grandma. Yeah
Nic 7:27
and two of them
Darra 7:28
two two two babies two two young-ins a four-year-old and three month old They're so precious
Nic 7:36
They're getting big too aren't
Darra 7:37
they they are and smart smart
four-year-old
Nic 7:41
just kind of runs in the family. It seems
Darra 7:42
yeah
Nic 7:43
to be running in this family. Well the kids are turning out smarter and all the damn adults
Darra 7:46
It's
Nic 7:47
just good
Darra 7:48
Yeah, yeah, so two boys of my own and I have a stepson and a step's daughter With Josh my husband and We are you know, we're we're at that stage of empty nest right now You know pretty much our youngest is going to be starting her senior high school, but you know We're at that stage. We don't we don't have a lot of kids in our home like you do anymore It's a different dynamic
Nic 8:14
Your house is kind of quiet and kind of like
Darra 8:16
Yeah, it's a little quiet.
Nic 8:19
it.
Darra 8:19
It's
Nic 8:19
It makes
Darra 8:19
a little quiet It's bittersweet
Nic 8:20
him.
Darra 8:21
is bittersweet is nice, you know You raise your kids and you're are in the thick of it and you're so busy and you know You're running around sports and you're doing all the school functions and all the activities and the late nights and the Croc pot dinners, and you know all the things as they're growing up and and you think man Is it ever gonna get any easier and oh I can't wait until we could just have a quiet night at home and then that day comes and
Nic 8:52
Well,
Darra 8:53
where are the kids at?
Nic 8:55
I know. It was like, like sport. Like you just said, it was sports and stuff. You know, once do you, you stop playing basketball and there's such a huge gap between her and Olivia that, like, yeah, what do we do now? So I'm kinda,
Darra 9:06
uhm,
Nic 9:07
kinda can feel a little bit of that. But our shirt's held, don't know what it's like to be an empty nester. God, I am counting them down, but I know when the time comes.
Darra 9:14
kinda,
Nic 9:14
I'll feel the same way
Darra 9:15
Yeah. You know, there's good to it though. I mean,
Nic 9:20
you have your naked
Darra 9:20
room. We have… We don't have a naked room, but we do walk around naked. You
Nic 9:30
got a naked room, it's the whole
Darra 9:32
The
Nic 9:32
house.
Darra 9:32
whole house is our naked room.
Nic 9:34
C, when your
Darra 9:34
walks…
Nic 9:34
father-in-law
Darra 9:35
Sorry, not sorry.
Nic 9:36
We take your father-in-law
Darra 9:37
walks in. Oh gosh.
Nic 9:38
I'm
Darra 9:39
locked indoors. We don't need any surprise visitors.
Nic 9:44
That would be my lock, yeah. We should just want to have a key to our house too and walk.
Darra 9:50
I
Nic 9:51
if
Darra 9:51
mean,
Nic 9:51
people have keys to our house, I don't even know about, so I'm sure.
Darra 9:54
I don't care if the kids come back home at any time. Drop in to say hi. It's like, no sh-t.
Nic 9:59
Pretty sure they wouldn't do that
Darra 10:00
What?
Nic 10:00
again after the first time. They'll call from here on out. See? I think there's a bonus to that. That's awesome. When in you, the two boys, Wesley, the oldest?
Darra 10:13
Yeah.
Nic 10:13
The comedian, too.
Darra 10:15
Yeah,
Nic 10:15
Oh, we're going
Darra 10:15
he's
Nic 10:15
to get
Darra 10:15
joining.
Nic 10:15
his name here.
Darra 10:16
I hope so. I want him on our podcast. hope so. I hope he comes on.
Nic 10:24
no, no, no, there's
Darra 10:24
No,
Nic 10:24
no hoping. He's going in.
Darra 10:25
He will.
Nic 10:26
I'm all
Darra 10:26
I
Nic 10:26
black.
Darra 10:27
don't He'll be ready soon as we ask him. He'll be like, "Yeah, f--k yeah. Let's do this." But he is funny and he's always been funny. He's a funny kid and it was always his dream to tell jokes and make people laugh and get up there and I'm so proud of him for doing
Nic 10:44
in a comedian, I think, is one of the hardest things to actually have to get up there. You are screwed and I so bad.
Darra 10:51
Right
Nic 10:51
from the jolt.
Darra 10:52
It
Nic 10:53
takes some balls.
Darra 10:53
He keeps doing it. I remember when he first decided to like do the open mics and he was telling me about it and his first show was, you know, what he said was it kind of bombed and which, y know, is to be expected. It's your very first time up there doing anything like that and you're getting up in front of a crowd of people and trying to make them laugh and you're nervous and
Nic 11:15
was that his first one where you guys asked you on the
Darra 11:17
and?
Nic 11:17
program
Darra 11:18
That wasn't the first one. That was at least six months in. Yeah. For telling jokes. For telling jokes, people, you know, some people are just real sensitive these days.
Nic 11:30
And I thought
Darra 11:30
not.
Nic 11:30
it
Darra 11:30
It's
Nic 11:31
was his first
Darra 11:31
like
Nic 11:31
one
Darra 11:31
the
Nic 11:31
or
Darra 11:31
jokes, okay, take a joke.
Nic 11:33
He
Darra 11:34
had been doing it for a few months and
Nic 11:37
we like brand new at it.
Darra 11:38
Yeah, he was still new. He had been it for a few months. He was still new at it though. He was still doing, you know, he's doing the open mics and
Nic 11:44
We
Darra 11:44
trying to get
Nic 11:45
need?
Darra 11:45
his name out there.
Nic 11:45
He'd like to take with us. We need to be able to go film him, just like sit there. And I don't want to ever use anything without anybody's permission.
Darra 11:53
Right.
Nic 11:53
At least be on scene. I want to see him live.
Darra 11:56
I want to see him.
Nic 11:57
I've
Darra 11:58
never seen him. I'm his mom. I've never seen him. No, not once. I have not. And you know, I think that's by design. I don't think he wants me to see him. I think he's a little like, you know, he's a little Chris and I'm sure it'd be hard for him to be up there telling certain jokes and with his mom and the audience.
Nic 12:19
But if she didn't know, if he didn't know,
Darra 12:22
you
Nic 12:22
know what I'm saying? I'm going to sneak in and find out because that's the same way. But you know him.
Darra 12:28
I know
Nic 12:28
It's
Darra 12:28
him.
Nic 12:28
a thing. He's my, if I were to do that and I was going to get up there, my mom knows who I am. So it was just kind of like, oh no, that's Nicholas. And I can't believe you'd say that. But
Darra 12:37
yeah. And I'm a super fan of his regardless. Like, I don't, I don't care. I don't give a sh-t. What he's saying up there. I'm a super fan. He's funny. I've known him his whole life. Just ask me
Nic 12:47
the way you say sh-t. A little thing.
Darra 12:48
He's like, I'm funny.
Nic 12:51
And
Darra 12:51
to
Nic 12:51
then Hayden.
Darra 12:52
do this?
Nic 12:52
What
Darra 12:53
Hayden.
Nic 12:53
does Hayden
Darra 12:53
Oh,
Nic 12:54
want to do? Who
Darra 12:55
Hayden.
Nic 12:56
I
Darra 12:56
Hayden. He's, he's just got such a big heart. You know, he's trying to figure it out. He is about to turn 21. And right now he's working with his dad, his dad owns a business and he's, he's working under his dad and learning all that. But I think he wants more. I don't, I just think he's not quite sure exactly what he's doing. And he's trying to figure it out.
Nic 13:18
planned a little
Darra 13:19
And you know, yeah, he's trying to find a direction.
Nic 13:21
bit.
Darra 13:22
But he's doing really good. He's doing good. Proud of my kids.
Nic 13:25
And then we mentioned your husband, Josh. He's actually.
Darra 13:27
Yeah,
Nic 13:28
behind
Darra 13:28
H the, just,
Nic 13:29
scenes over here.
Darra 13:30
for everybody out there, just so you know, my husband is the brains behind this operation.
They're
Nic 13:37
sitting here forever, trying to figure out how to scrap out.
Darra 13:39
He
Nic 13:39
All
Darra 13:39
is.
Nic 13:39
we got to do is talk, and he's over here smiling.
Darra 13:41
Yeah,
Nic 13:42
Don't worry, we're going to get pictures of him, too, at some point in time,
Darra 13:45
that's that
Nic 13:45
so
Darra 13:46
point.
Nic 13:46
we'll get him on there.
Darra 13:47
He can be sure, will.
Nic 13:48
And then, we'll definitely get Nicole on here.
Darra 13:50
Oh, yeah.
Nic 13:51
Hide him back there, too. I'll ask you a couple little stupid questions.
Darra 13:55
Yeah.
Nic 13:55
Um,
Darra 13:56
let's get into it.
Nic 13:57
what is your main goal, and what is the main purpose you want to get out of this podcast? but for our audience as well. So, what are the two main goals that you're
Darra 14:05
Um,
Nic 14:05
joining?
Darra 14:05
you know, I know that we're going to talk a lot about family dynamics. We're going to talk a lot about our family, and, you know, the both of us, you know, what we have in common the both of us is, um, you know, we're steps.
I have a guy at step kids. We've come, we both have, you know, the blended families. And, there's a lot that goes along with that. We have a lot of stories about, you know, that dynamic of trying to figure it out with, with step kids and, um, blending the families, the X's and time goes on and trying to raise the kids. We've, we've got some stories. Um, so we're going to talk a lot about that kind of stuff, a lot of our family dynamics, uh, so I guess my goal for this is just to be relatable to other people.
Nic 15:01
have
Darra 15:01
Because I know, like, we're not the only people dealing with this sh-t. And we've got some funny stories. We've got some also serious stuff that we want to dig into. Um, I hope to make people laugh with our experiences. Um, and also make people think and maybe, you know, bring a little bit of perspective, because I know people are in the thick of it. Um, I've got perspective of, you know, I'm kind of on the other side of, of that, like I said, our, we're kind of empty nesters right now, so we've gone through it.
Nic 15:27
Mm-hmm.
Darra 15:28
Um, and you're in the middle of it with the younger kids and you're,
Nic 15:33
10 more years.
Darra 15:35
[laughs]
Nic 15:35
It started late, it just started early, but I, you know, I couldn't,
Darra 15:38
Yeah,
Nic 15:39
I was
Darra 15:39
starting
Nic 15:39
too
Darra 15:39
early is where
Nic 15:39
stupid.
Darra 15:40
it's at everybody, starting early is where it's at to let
Nic 15:42
tell-- Unless
Darra 15:43
anybody
Nic 15:43
you're an idiot like me.
Darra 15:45
[laughs]
Nic 15:46
I'm a sh-t I'll go wrong. Which way?
Darra 15:48
Yeah, yeah. What about you?
Nic 15:50
there was a whole bunch of reasons. Um, like I said earlier, I had mentioned I'd, originally want to start off a blog. Just to write. I used to have a Little thing on Facebook, I would write every time I'd get upset or something that just bothered me, that it just would eat at me and shoot the sh-t with Nick and so I had started asking around about me, returning into a blog and-- everybody said, "Just do this instead."
Darra 16:12
Podcast is where it's at, let's do it, let's do it, brother.
Nic 16:16
So I love to be descriptive. I love that for me writing is kind of an outlet and being descriptive in my writing
Darra 16:21
Mm-hmm.
Nic 16:22
is so I like pulling people into what I'm trying to feel and so-- What I want out of this is that is I want people to relate, be relatable with us and, uh, and pull them into our stories because our stories are in them as well, you know, healing.
Darra 16:42
Mm-hmm.
Nic 16:42
I want to be able to find a way to heal for me. Um, some of the stories that will bring up are, "I need that healing." And I think this is a huge part of it and it's, you know, being honest with myself and doing it with my family around and then being honest with, you know, our--
Darra 17:02
Yeah.
Nic 17:02
Our people out there and hope that somebody else can be honest with themselves because I don't want them to be 46 years old and where I'm at. And, you know, they should have Kootah Wootas and--
Darra 17:15
you-- don't should all over yourself.
Nic 17:17
Yeah. I just don't want-- I don't want this to be healing for everybody around you. So there's-- there's some things that I can really get out of it and, you know, I know other people can't too. So humor.
Darra 17:30
Yep. [laughter]
Nic 17:30
And seriousness, some family, you know, where we will bring up some of our family stupid quirks and how we deal with them and what we do to f--king f--k with them. We know-- I love to f--k with people, so sarcasm and pranks are really cool. So we're going to, we're going to kind of dive into some pranks and stuff but-- catchphrase. What is a good catchphrase or I need you to make one for me and I will make one for you. No, you don't have to do this right this
Darra 17:55
I
Nic 17:55
minute.
Darra 17:55
think if something right now in
Nic 17:56
No,
Darra 17:56
the spot,
Nic 17:57
no, I'll give you, I'll give you a little bit of time,
Darra 17:59
oh good.
Nic 17:59
but we're gonna come back to the next podcast and you gotta have a catchphrase so,
Darra 18:03
ehm.
Nic 18:04
You know, I think I kind of like f--king dare the F-Bomb queen.
Darra 18:09
laughs
Nic 18:09
mean, I gotta have a catchphrase for you,
Darra 18:10
I
Nic 18:11
sh-t. You can't have it any other way. So I may just throw that one out there, but we won't make it official just yet, so.
Darra 18:17
I mean, it
Nic 18:18
It does-
Darra 18:19
fits, it does fit, it does fit. I can't be mad about
Nic 18:22
I can't
Darra 18:23
it.
Nic 18:23
be mad about it. And another question, one more to think about. So, I like to actually come back before we leave Ben, I want to do one more podcast, but I want to be able to do one more podcast and kinda dive into some other subjects, but. laughs between the two of us. Would most likely be famous over nothing, and why?
Darra 18:43
laughs
Nic 18:44
So, the question to contemplate for tomorrow is put.
Darra 18:47
Okay.
Nic 18:49
I haven't highlighted here for you, so you gotta think it's something cool, but I got your catchphrase. I was been thinking about that all day after I wrote this question down
Darra 18:56
Okay.
Nic 18:56
so.
Darra 18:57
I like
Nic 18:58
it. I like it. They're the FBum Queen, so. I was gonna be here in a new catchphrase
Darra 19:02
It's
Nic 19:02
for
Darra 19:02
necessary.
Nic 19:02
her. It is, it is. But yes, at the end of all of this, at the end of all of our podcast, you always want to kind of throw out a little- just a little something. And I hope that this helps, but- To end it, first off, thank you. Thank you for listening.
Darra 19:20
Yes, they-
Nic 19:20
Thank you for the time, Josh, for putting in here to get all this going up and going. Thank you, Debra, for-
Darra 19:26
Yeah.
Nic 19:26
Your patience, and I know you're a little nervous going
Darra 19:29
And
Nic 19:29
into
Darra 19:29
nothing but
Nic 19:29
doing this.
Darra 19:30
patience.
Nic 19:30
Hey, sh-t, you're doing a great job. I wanna say, in action, breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit at home and think about it. Go out and get busy. So, the only reason that we're doing this podcast is because we just follow that right there. So,
Darra 19:47
yeah.
Nic 19:47
All it takes is the first step, first step in the right direction. After that, it'll all start to fall into place. But for another day, I
Darra 19:54
Debra
Nic 19:54
thank you
Darra 19:55
there.
Nic 19:55
guys, thank you and we'll chat tomorrow. Peace.
Darra 19:59
Peace.
